Background Info on Brian and Stewie

Producer Kara Vallow has given FSN some exclusive background information on how this Sunday’s 150th episode “Brian and Stewie” came to be. Kara told:
“Stewie and Brian” was an idea that Seth had for a while. He and I are both huge fans of All in the Family, a show which Seth admired for being consistently ranked number one in the ratings while breaking every single one of TV’s taboos: racism, bigotry, sexism, homosexuality, hippie dippy socialist nonsense, liberal-feminist ideals and was always funny. Anyway, there was this one episode – which was my father’s favorite – in which Archie accidently locks himself in the cellar overnight with a bottle of vodka. It was a departure tonally from the series and just brilliantly crafted. An Archie Bunker tour de force.
When we screened this episode, it was also 6 minutes long (we assume Kara meant it was 6 minutes too long). This episode was so nuanced and seamless that it didn’t seem possible to cut that much time out of it without losing the flow – it’s kind of dark tempered, more of an emotional drama than your typical episode.
I asked our network executive if there was anyway to air the show in it’s entirety. It took a lot of wheeling and dealing over several months until they finally said if I could propose something that would work to fill out an hour, they would consider it. I heard about Fox doing a Glee oriented promotion called “Fox Rocks” or something and went to them with an idea to capitalize on that while giving Seth the opportunity to air the full episode. My production manager Brent came up with the idea of using musical sequences to fill out an hour. We couldn’t air all of the never before seen sequences due to legal issues but we do have one phenomenal musical sequence that has never been seen before and the rest are some old favorites.
Kara also told FSN that the episode is written by Gary Janetti (who is currently working on Seth’s fourth show with Alex Borstein), and directed by Dom Bianchi and Joe Vaux. Catch the episode this Sunday, May 2nd at 9pm on Fox.
